Reality

Disturbing...the unspecific nature of how they plan to decrease the expat population is worrying.

wyrdsister

WTF! Please tell me that is a joke.

Mike

Hi wyrdsister. I'm sorry to say, this is not a joke. This is an image of the poster taken from the site.

Roger

Excellent, presumably there is a huge social agenda and educational reform to follow and this is just a teaser flyer!!!

I look forward to seeing the ex-pat population decrease as the Bermudian population becomes better educated and wealthy.

Hurrah for the initiative, I'll stay keenly tuned for the next installment!

Phoenix

Makes it sound like they're gonna have snipers picking off the expats as they ride by on their mopeds.

Mike

An echo from the past? http://bermudasucks.blogs.com/weblog/2005/12/are_you_tired.html

Rockpig

I'm Back!!!!!

This is just a thought and meant to be funny at the expense of the people who put that sign up. If Expats did all leave then over the next few decades Bermudians will have this next little problem on their hands which make me believe the idiots who hung that sign up are not very forward thinking.

Hey good Idea get rid of all the Expats then the gene pool will really get sketchy. I like the idea that if Expats all go home then the person who hung that sign their children's kids will only have themselves to procreate with and therefore genetically speaking they will have offspring who will suffer mental and physical deformities over time (again not meant to be mean just a fact of genetics). Anyone ever watched the X-Files episode of the mother who lived under the bed and had children with her three sons (meant to be funny). Then Expats will have to come back to work in the hospitals to look after the retards who support that mentality (again meant to be funny). I'm all for it Expat go home!

Reality

Well, even if foreigners don't come to Bermuda, Bermudians can go overseas... hmm... so, lemme get this straight. Bermudians are entitled to live & work in, say, UK... but resent foreigners coming to Bermuda?

Rummie

Well, it looks like were back to where we were in the sixties-seventies. Apparantly, the seed that was sown has grown with the 'planters'.

Just remember, it's in your face and mine so we can take steps to repel, eliviate, or move on. Move on seems to make more sense thus avoiding confrontation on all fronts.

For all my ex-pat friends out there, thanks for keeping the foundation strong. It's up to the architects to see whether it crumbles.

Better have a rum before we 'rumble'.

someone

I grew up in Bermuda but now live in Canada and I love this site...Every post seems to make me laugh. Keep up the good work!

Reality

Thanks, Someone... sometimes you have to find the humour in Bermuda life or it would drive you nuts. If we can make a little difference occasionally, that's even better.

CYa

"Well, even if foreigners don't come to Bermuda, Bermudians can go overseas... hmm... so, lemme get this straight. Bermudians are entitled to live & work in, say, UK... but resent foreigners coming to Bermuda?"

True. But who the hell would want to employ the lazy f&*kers?!!!

retro

these locals are even educated. These resentful people harass locals in the workplace. Sheesh. I can't believe things like this go around.

retro

Correction...Expats are more educated - Fact. Locals are resentful - Fact . Locals like to harass expats in the workplace - FACT. Locals couldn't hold down a job oversees if they tried.

CharlieC

Did anybody see the orange flyer going around at the moment? A little more detailed then this one with threats of 'tyres' being slashed and pets disappearing.

Reality

I did see that, Charlie... sad. Apparently, part of the grudge is that expats take all the best parking spots, making Bermudians get parking tickets. Therefore the write thinks slashing their tyres is appropriate. Considering it uses words such as 'look like' and 'sound like' it would seem that race is a prime motivator in this.

Les B. Avenue

Mike

hey girl, did you write the great letter to the editor in last Saturday's RG?

http://www.theroyalgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060930/OPINION/109300189

About half way down, scan for: "Dear Sir,I think the backlash aimed at..."

The parody is funny, but there really are people out there who harbour a lot of ill will.

Simple suggestion

Hey Expats,

Here's a suggestion.

Organize a 2 day island-wide ex-pat boycott.

"Don't 'Buy Bermuda'"

For 2 days in early december or january, don't buy from our shops. Don't buy cars, bikes, groceries, coffee, clothes, trinkets, toys, condos, or anything else.

Don't take our ferries, our busses, don't visit our attractions or our restaurants. Don't do anything Bermudian, don't take taxi's don't support any Bermudian owned or operated business.

For a measly 2 days, don't buy one single thing Bermudian.

Show Bermudians how much our economy would be crippled without foreign money.

Phoenix

Not a bad idea, SS. The bars and restaurants would suffer a whole lot.

M Gifkins

Do you know - fancied Bermuda this year for a holiday so I started looking into the island - shame to find out that it's full of lucky locals with full access to Britain - and in return to be so small minded as to begrudge a population of ex-pats who bring money, yet seem entitled to nothing - same old same old!

Valentine

MG - don't be put off by what you have read above, a very small portion of the island is as poisenous as the editor of the pamphlet. If you're looking for a holiday where you can chill totally but don't mind paying the high prices then Bermuda is for you.

Amanda

Hi, i'm a brit living in Portugal, my sister lives in Bermuda, about 3 years now and over the last year or so i've heard about this bad feeling and poster stories - stumbled across this site recently and yes, it makes me laugh - spent about an hour cracking up at a forum about 'big bums' and Bermudan dietary habits - was such a cat fight....but it's a shame there is such animosity between the two 'sides'...you think they are all thick and lazy and they think you are all arrogant and rich...maybe a bit of truth on either side in comparative terms but god, on such a small island must be a nightmare. Anyway, my sis has decided to leave the island, she is touring Europe and then ending up with me, in Portugal at the end of this year..CAN'T WAIT!! I hate to think of her wasting her time in such a place, sounds very over priced and overated to me. But, for the rest of you who are left there (whichever side you are on)..try and enjoy it - or vote with your feet...plenty other places in the world..xx

getting ready to leave

Flyers have been hung up around the hospital telling expat nurses and medical staff to go home!! As we are vampires and vultures. If we did this would leave around 10 qualified Bermudian nurses. Jesus could you imagion they'd have to do nights, work bank holidays and god forbid not go too church as there'd be no one to work Sat or Sun. Actually they'd have to get up off their fat arses and do something. They'd no longer be managers as there would be no one to manage. this is a good thing as none of them currently have the qualification or experience to manage themselves let alone more experienced or higher educated nurses. The hospital strives to be a center of excellance, and gold standards, to the rest of the world it a DUMP!! So maybe the flyer hangers are right as working in a third world dump is not that good for a CV. Although for my next job I will argue that working in the third world has boarden my professional experince and made me more greatful for the hospital falicates that we take for granted in first world countries. I could after I leave start a charity to help KEMH, but I'm not going to, I'll just tell me mates never too work there!!!!

slippery

with respect to an earlier comment on the what if's of the expats leaving and the gene pool getting smaller.
my response is this; we see the effects of a small gene pool now!!!! its not something that WILL happen. It is something that HAS happened!!!!!!!!!!!

The quality of education is, is not lower than 15 years ago

Book Recommendation

  • Robert A. Heinlein: Stranger in a Strange Land

Robert A. Heinlein: Stranger in a Strange Land
Please, buy Heinlein's masterpiece - the brilliant and spectacular novel that grew from a cult favourite to a bestseller to a classic in a few short years. It is the story of Valentine Michael Smith, the man from Mars who taught humankind grokking and water-sharing. And love.
